Aluminium anodising

The eloxal process or as it is called in professional circles, Anodizing (anodic oxidation) is a kind of electro-chemical oxidation process where the surface of aluminium is covered by solid, abrasion resistant, non-corrosive and at the same time colourfast and aesthetic layer.

In our factory’s automated production line the workpieces are anodized according to predefined programs, thus the quality of the recurrent products is reproducible.

Anodizing - Anodic oxidation of aluminum

Anodic oxidation

Aluminum is well known for its excellent corrosion resistance. This property is due to the dense oxide layer formed on its surface, which protects the base metal from further corrosion.

Anodic oxidation, also known as anodizing, is intended to perform this process that occurs in nature under artificial conditions. Aluminum is connected as an anode (positive pole) in a dilute acid (phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, sulfuric acid, chromic acid, etc.). Oxygen is evolved at the anode, and hydrogen at the cathode. The evolved oxygen immediately reacts with the aluminum and creates a porous oxide layer. The thickness of the oxide layer can be varied depending on the end use.

A colorless, decorative coating is usually 5-15 micrometers thick, and a thicker coating that can be easily colored can be 15-20 micrometers thick.

During coloring, color pigments are introduced into the tubular pores of the formed oxide layer by adsorption (chemical) or electrolytic (metal oxide deposition) methods.

At the end of the process, the pores are closed with the so-called pore seal, thus obtaining a durable, corrosion-resistant, non-fading surface.

Technology

To achieve a perfect quality oxide layer, it is essential that the surface of the workpiece is clean, homogeneous and oxide-free.
To achieve this, the technological sequence always begins with degreasing.
Rinsing is required between technological processes.
Satin finishing is an optional step, after degreasing it can be used to create a homogeneous matte surface.

The anodizing process is followed by coloring and/or pore sealing.

Pore sealing is most often done in hot water or nickel acetate solution.

The appearance of the anodized surface is strongly dependent on the quality and quantity of the aluminum alloying elements.
Increasing the amount of alloying elements reduces the anodization ability of aluminum.

Anodizing properties of different types of aluminum

The following table shows the effect of alloying materials on anodization.

Hard anodizing

Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) or corundum is the second hardest mineral found in nature. (1. diamond) In the case of parts with special demands where there is a risk of wear due to friction, the so-called hard anodized surface provides a good solution.

In hard anodizing, the bath must be cooled strongly. At low temperatures, the process of oxide redissolution slows down, and the oxide layer formed becomes dense and non-porous. The typical layer thickness is 20-100 micrometers. The appearance of the surface will be gray-dark gray or black, depending on the quality of the alloy.

The line is designed linearly. The technological sequence starts in the degreasing bath furthest from the loading/unloading position. After degreasing/satinizing, a cascade rinse (2x) follows, followed by deoxidizing sulfuric acid pickling. This is followed by normal or hard anodizing. After anodizing, a cascade rinse (3x) is again performed, and then, if necessary, coloring is the next step. The final technological step of oxidation is pore sealing with soft water at 96-98°C.

The theoretical capacity of the line is approximately 8m2/hour for anodized surface, in the case of natural anodizing.

On the line, a rim extraction system has been installed on the tanks with a capacity of 22,000 m3/hour. The extracted air is released into the open air through a water spray, so that the acid and alkali residues are washed out of the air and returned to the wastewater treatment plant.

The wastewater treatment plant cleans the contaminated rinsing water generated in the plant. The essence of the process is to remove the dissolved aluminum in the water and adjust the pH value to the dischargeable value of 6-10. The system operates automatically. It requires human supervision, and the necessary chemicals must be continuously replenished in the dissolving tanks. The aluminum is precipitated from the water in the reactor at a pH value of 9.5 with lime milk pH adjustment in the form of hydroxide precipitate (Al(OH)3). Due to the flocculating agent used, the precipitate is in a large, well-settled form and enters the settling tank. From there, the clean water flows away and enters the public sewer through a gravel filter. The settled precipitate is pressed onto a filter press, and the sludge formed there is emptied into a big-bag bag and then transported.
